Digital learning and transformation of education
Open digital learning opportunities for allUNESCO REPORT
This community-based self help project has been initiated to provide world-class education, from ECD to UNIVERSITY, as well as free medical cover to all populations in our region. I expect that many of you will participate in this endeavor through the LSO/VO/WO/Government sponsored schools and health units of various descriptions located close to your home.
I have also established an idea demonstration facility in Hunza. Any interested participant can visit and clarify any questions arising about this project. I will inshallah be personally available from April through the end of October each year.
My advocacy revolves around acquiring a specialty commensurate with God-gifted APTITUDE by each seeker of knowledge/skill. In this age, it has become totally accessible and it MEANS BLIND.

In the age of the Internet, knowledge about institutions and their effectiveness is only a click away. Information becomes viral, following vectors that take it anywhere there is Internet connectivity.

Clear goals and standards: All partners must understand and commit to
clearly defined objectives. Benchmarks must be set for the achievement of these
goals in terms of timeliness and quality.
Words of Wisdom from the Guide:
“To position the Jamat correctly for the next decades. serious issues and for you to understand where I would like the Jamat to be, Insha-Allah, in the world in 10 years, 15 years, 20 years.” 13 December 2008 and

"A vast decentralization of decision-making is already occurring in many countries; it has the advantage of placing new responsibilities in the hands of local communities... For the key to future progress will lie less in traditional top-down systems of command and control -- and more in a broad, bottom-up spirit of coordination and cooperation."
"Social progress, in the long run, will not be found by delegating an all-dominant role to any one player -- but rather through multi-sector partnerships. And within each sector of society, diversity should be a watchword. Healthy communities must respect a range of educational choices ... [The Ummah] must become full and even leading participants in the Knowledge Society of the 21st Century. That will mean embracing the values of collaboration and coordination, openness and partnership, choice and diversity -- which will undergird the Knowledge Society, learning constantly to review and revise and renew what we think we know -- learning how to go on learning. In the age of the Internet, knowledge is universally shaped, universally accessible, and universally applied. And successful institutions of learning must be global institutions... [I]n the Knowledge Society, productive research is most often partnership research ... sharing agendas and exchanging insights. New knowledge is a constantly unfolding gift of God -- but it is rarely something that is achieved in isolation."
NOTE: TELE-MEDICINE:
Once the system of DISTANCE EDUCATION gets current in our region, I have the desire to use the same facilities established by PDCN (AKDN) and also those established by the government or the self-help groups for providing world-class health cover through TELE-MEDICINE, it is, therefore, my request to all present and future doctors from the region to learn these techniques (DIGITAL HEALTH BEYOND BORDERS).

VISION: Populations in the region are economically and geographically constrained in availing of "Brick and Mortar" facilities in higher education available in urban centers. Education and learning need to be set free - and new education and communication technologies now make this possible. A number of IT facilities have been established both by Government and the CIVIL SOCIETY such as KADO (3 centers) and also notably by PDCN (14 centers) – an agency of the AKDN – in all the districts of GB with the noble aim of improving quality of education. These however have not been utilized to their full potential due to the prevalent culture in the country.
The idea that students from around the globe can join a course taught by renowned faculty - that they can support each other, discuss problems, find answers, and collaboratively engage with the material – is truly revolutionary.
Nothing has more potential to lift more people out of poverty. Nothing has more potential to unlock a billion more brains to solve the world’s biggest problems. And nothing has more potential to enable us to reimagine higher education than the massive open online course or MOOC platforms
Thomas L. Friedman, Pulitzer Prize Winner
Some new things are praised to the skies because people have a weakness for the shiny and novel. Others are hyped because they will obviously change the world, and it always takes the world a little while to adjust. MOOC's are of the latter kind.
Kevin Carey, director of the education-policy program at the New America Foundation.
We envision a future where everyone has access to a world-class education that has so far been available to a select few. We aim to empower people with education that will improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in.
MISSION: To facilitate the acquisition of FREE OF COST World-class Education at doorsteps in all the districts of GB.
STRATEGY:
The existing IT facilities established over the last few years by agencies such as AKDN - specifically by PDCN - the Government education department and also self-help entities will be gradually encouraged to introduce this education mode for the populations within their jurisdiction. SASLLC will act as a feeding unit for all interested facilities, while PDCN will provide WALK-IN TRAINING to the TKN volunteers who want to help the communities by providing this revolutionary theme of education and skill development.
The additional facilities, specifically MULTIMEDIA PROJECTOR, PRINTER and SCANNER, and in some cases reliable electric supply through SOLAR SYSTEM components, are to be financed through the community effort by SMCs and LSO boards.

I am in the process of commissioning "LIFELONG LEARNING CENTERS" in this region with the aim of introducing Distance Education to populations who otherwise are economically and geographically constrained in availing "Brick and Mortar" facilities available in urban centers.
I recently held a session with teachers, the school management committee and students of the 9th/10th class to demonstrate that world-class education from school to university is feasible within the available resources of Government Model School Karimabad through Distant Learning. We have agreed to establish "SULTAN ALI SAMARQAND LIFELONG LEARNING CENTRE" - and open a university) - in this school using the excellent system provided by PDCN and lying underutilized since installation. One of the computers will be used as a server for the proposed network and store the following category of coaching material covering all the topics/sub-topics/specialties in which any interested person (irrespective of gender) wishes to educate or upgrade his/her skills.

Comments by Muhammad Din, Vice Principal:
"The main objectives of this Centre are as under:
1 To provide FREE quality education at doorsteps.
2 To enhance the teaching quality of the schools.
3 To provide access to better coaching tools for teachers.
4 To access the coaching material of the best educational institutions in the world.
5 To avail the opportunity of free education available on the Internet around the world.
6 To enhance the LIFE SKILLS of the educated population and provide LIFELONG LEARNING opportunities.
EDIP - Educational Development and Improvement Programme - of PDCN Gilgit working in this have established this facility in 2010 in this school as LRS - Learning Resource Centre - for the school as well as for a few other feeding units of this school. Its main objective is an enhancement the quality of teaching and learning and to provide missing facilities, especially IT-related gadgets, and equipment. More than ten brand new computers have been provided along with DSL connectivity. Other facilities student chairs, teaching kits for all the teachers of LRS, and short/long course arrangements have also been made at PDCN Gilgit and IED Karachi. This computer system was not operational for the last nearly one year due to some inevitable circumstances. But after the brigadier’s intervention, we have a bright chance to use this facility for multiple purposes in the best interest of students in particular and teachers in general. Educated general public of the locality will also take benefit according to the schedules.
Although the facility is available 24-hrs a day, it is being planned that SASLLC and Open University, be open at least for 12 hours daily. Mr. KARIM KHAN has been requested to facilitate this Centre from 9 am to 3 pm and the office has moved to this Centre. TKN volunteers will look after the center from 3:00 pm to 8.00 pm daily. An income generation mechanism will enable the school to offer a compensation package for the time taken by these volunteers. Mohd din, A.H/M will assume the role of Honorary VC of this facility while Mr. Karim Khan and Mr. Aurangzeb will act in the capacity of DEANs. An Academic council will also be formed very soon."
What resources will I need for this mode of education?
All you need is a willingness to think and learn.

SEARCH FOR COURSES:
As I mentioned above, there are
countless free sources available online. Here are a few of the best:
Coursera. Coursera
works with top universities from around the world to offer classes online for
free. You can take classes from a variety of disciplines including computer
sciences, psychology, and Spanish.
OpenStudy.
OpenStudy is a social learning network that allows you to connect with
individuals with the same learning goals as you.
Khan Academy.
I freaking love Khan Academy. You’ll find over 4,000 videos covering topics
ranging from algebra to finance to history. My favorite part of Khan Academy,
though, is math exercises. You start with basic math and work your way up to
calculus in an adaptive, game-like environment. I’ve been slowly going through
the exercises to freshen up on my math.
Duolingo. Free
website to learn foreign languages. It’s a pretty cool setup. As you progress
through the lessons, you’re simultaneously helping translate websites and other
documents.
Code Academy.
Learn to code for free with interactive exercises. I wish Code Academy was
around when I was learning how to build AoM. It would have helped a lot.
edX. Harvard
University and MIT partnered together to create interactive, free online
courses. The same world-renowned professors that teach at Harvard and MIT have
created the courses on edX. You can find courses for just about any subject.
I’ve signed up for a class called The Ancient Greek Hero. Class started last
week, but you can still sign up. Join me!
Udacity. Udacity
is similar to edX and Coursera. College-level classes are taught online for free.
CreativeLive.
I discovered CreativeLive a few weeks ago. It’s an interesting concept. You can
watch the live stream of the course being taught for free, but if you want to
view the course later and at your own pace you have to pay for it. The courses
focus on more creative and business subjects like videography and online
marketing. I’ve sat in on a few of the free courses and was impressed with the
curriculum.
TED. TED
compiles speeches and lectures not only by professors but interesting people
from many different walks of life. TED talks are lighter than academic
lectures, often quite funny, and concentrate on interesting ideas and concepts.
And most are 20 minutes or less, so they’re great for those with a short
attention span.
iTunes U. Download thousands of free podcast lectures taught by the
best professors from around the world and learn while in your car.
YouTube EDU.
Instead of watching a bunch of auto-tuned cats, enrich your mind by browsing
through YouTube EDU. They have thousands of videos that cover a variety of
topics.

ALISON — MOOCs & Redefining Education for the Next Generation
Speech by ALISON CEO & Founder, Mike Feerick, YEO, Washington DC Sept 12th 2013
Dear Hisamullah,
Education and learning need to be set free - and new education and communication technologies now make this possible.
At a recent conference on Youth Employment Opportunities held in Washington DC, USA, our Founder and CEO Mike Feerick was invited to speak about the exciting possibilities before us. He talked about many familiar topics, from youth unemployment, empowering women, reaching the 5 Billion, and overcoming the teacher shortage, to how our attitude to dynamic competency-based certification and innovation radically needs to change.
Above all, Feerick outlines how free education can become universal, dynamic, and empowering, if we allow new educational opportunities and methodologies to flourish.

Example of how a large file can be communicated:
This is a large file and can not be attached with normal mail, hence I have resorted to sending it to you through "Google Drive" It can also be sent through MSN "Sky Drive". Please educate all users of SAS LLC.
Some audio and video lectures are also available through MIT's iTunes U and YouTube sites.
Is it possible to save the video files to a disk or to my hard drive?
YouTube
Some of our videos are available on YouTube. The download is not available for these files. To see the complete collection, visit http://youtube.com/mit and this link LIST OF AUDIO VIDEO LECTURES.
iTunes U
Links to our videos on iTunes U require Apple's free iTunes application. If you have this application, these links will automatically open it. Once you have iTunes open, you can download a single lecture by selecting "Get Movie," or the entire course by selecting "Get Tracks." Once you've downloaded these lectures, iTunes will automatically add them to your library.
Internet Archive
Some OCW videos are available on Internet Archive as both MP4 and Real Media files (and a few other types provided by Internet Archive, such as OGG). To download these, right-click on the link (MP4 or RM) and select "Save Link As." To watch MP4 files, you need QuickTime. Real Media files require Real Player.
Is the MIT OpenCourseWare site compliant with W3C standards and accessibility requirements?
The templates we designed for our content management system (CMS) are both valid HTML 4.01 and meet Sec. 508 & WCAG AA Web Accessibility recommendations. Our style guide has been revised to include validating and checking the accessibility of HTML as part of the authoring process. Our standards require all images on our web pages to contain ALT attributes. Our data tables contain heavy use of the scope and headers attributes that make it easier to navigate using screenreaders such as JAWS.
We spend a lot of time on the accessibility of PDFs. As part of our conversion process, we remove any PDFs using Type 3 or bitmapped fonts. We use Adobe's "Make Accessible" plugin before finalizing the document. We work closely with the MIT Adaptive Technology for Information and Computing Lab to ensure that the MIT OpenCourseWare course sites are as accessible as possible.
As resources permit, we create transcripts and subtitles for our lecture videos. Approximately half of our lecture videos now contain transcripts. These are identified on each course home page under "Course Features."
What information does MIT OpenCourseWare collect from visitors to the site?
The information we collect from visitors helps us improve the MIT OpenCourseWare site, and assists us in evaluating the access, use, and impact of MIT OpenCourseWare on the worldwide educational community. MIT OpenCourseWare collects the following information from visitors:
Information You Provide: We receive and store any information you enter on the MIT OpenCourseWare Web site or give us in any other way. You provide most such information when you submit feedback on the site, contact us by e-mail, or agree to participate in a visitor survey. all right folks, here are some tips about downloading the videos and subs. 1) you can go to http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical..., and click the link then you'll see the video window, there are some buttons behind it if your brain serves you well you'll find the "Download this Video opinion". in some cases you can directly go to iTunes U and search the relevant videos, or go to the Youtube MIT channel you sure will find them as well sorry i can't upload some pics there.
well, there are several ways to get them, how can I put that? well, here i introduce the easiest one, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMHt6s..., watch this video then you'll figure it out. of course you can use Google Chrome inspect element to find the sub and convert it to an SRT file but that could be kinda tough.
that's it, hoping it could be helpful.

This is good initiative, but it needs to be affiliated with a recognized institution as a distance learning centre. Secondly we have to develop a reading culture in our society. Unless people want to read, they won’t take advantage of these facilities. It would be a good idea to have sub centres in other villages, so that they are linked with the main centre.
Telemedicine is a good option for delivering expert medical advice, but the local health facility needs to be onboard for effective implementation of the expert medical advice.
This would certainly be a unique achievement where a remote mountain society is to be brought on to the map of cyber education.
Implementation on the ground would entail a lot of actions and reactions!!
Basically we’ve to make the society ready for being receptive to the idea of becoming a knowledge society from a quasi peasant culture.
I think this is a gigantic task which needs to carried forward despite the bumpy ground ahead.
