IT HAPPENED IN CHITRAL THROUGH PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT, CAN HAPPEN IN GB AS WELL.

PPAF Collaborates with ESEF & TeleTaleem to Boost ICT-based Learning in Chitral    There isn’t any denying that technology has transcended borders, making learning accessible to people across geographies and time zones. With the proliferation of technological devices, from computers and laptops to smartphones and tablets, connectivity, communication, and collaboration is now a possibility. Technology has not only paced up the process of learning but has also minimized physical intervention in the process.

In view of this, Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) has expanded student learning through innovative technology by collaborating with Elementary and Secondary Education Foundation (ESEF) KP, and TeleTaleem a social enterprise leveraging ICT to connect users with quality learning opportunities. “The Educational Innovation for Bridging the Learning Gaps of Students” is an education uplift project that covered four community schools in the areas of District Chitral and Lower Dir Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The project connected students from community schools to professional teachers online for quality education in far-flung areas. It targeted primary grade students and teachers, aiming to improve their learning and teaching skills via innovative classroom practices. Community-based Schools (CBSs) Shakahandeh, Grambat Gol and Kalashgram situated in Village Bomborate, Birir, and Rumbore respectively in union council Ayun of District Chitral and a community-based school, Anangoro Khwar in union council Koto of District Lower Dir were covered under the initiative.

This unique initiative funded by PPAF spanned over 9 months, during this time as many as 265 students including 166 girls and 99 boys were enrolled in four schools. The project cost of Rs. 7.32 million included technological support for each school in the form of a digital classroom, equipped with multi-media equipment, tablet, and internet connectivity, linked via the internet to a remote teacher and resource center. The project also provided the cost for capacity building of teachers on session delivery, familiarization and use of equipment and assessment through online remote training and remote teaching.

Technology and the internet are used to connect primary grade students in community schools with professional teacher trainers, conducting online classes every day. The teachers observe this innovative classroom practice to improve and upgrade their skill set. Separate training sessions are conducted once a month by professional trainers using the online facility. Both the teaching and training sessions are monitored by relevant education staff of TeleTaleem. In addition, access to open educational content is provided to further reinforce the learning process of the teacher and students, alike. Continuous checks by TeleTaleem are also made in the form of pre and post assessments, so both teachers and students respond to the academic needs through proper planning, design and execution of lessons.

PPAF team carries out regular visits to these schools to monitor the impact of remote teaching through the use of internet and multimedia equipment. Significant improvement has been observed in CBS Kalashgram, Rumbore in UC Ayun, District Chitral, and CBS Anango Khar UC Koto, District Lower Dir while studying the impact of satellite learning in Maths, Science and English on 4 and 5 Graders.

According to the stats being reported by TeleTaleem, there has been a remarkable improvement in students’ performance as a result of this technology-based distance learning initiative. A whopping increase from 23.14 percent to 55.35 percent was observed in Grade 4 English while an increase from 20.18 to 39.99 percent was observed in grade 4 Mathematics. Similarly, improvement has also been observed in Grade 5 subjects as well. In Mathematics the percentage has increased from 24.13 to 37.66 and in Science from 25.5 to 46.99 percent. Likewise in English, the percentages achieved by students have risen from 24.13 to 43.88 percent.

The PPAF’s initiative has opened door new learning opportunities for teachers and students residing in remote areas. Under the agreement signed with the Elementary & Secondary Education Foundation (ESEF), Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, PPAF will hand over these four schools to ESEF by the end of this month. ESEF will be responsible for maintenance of the equipment installed by PPAF in these schools, it will continue to liaise with TeleTaleem in order to ensure that the efforts made, keep on bearing fruits in the coming days.

Extract: Civil Society Learning Material on Gender equity

Context: Public statement by RC Gilgit

The ethical values that are important to the AKDN agencies are:

5. Gender equity

Wherever an AKDN agency finds that local CSOs do not exhibit these ethical values, it is the agencies’ role to help them, just as much as making sure that their governance and management practices are in place. The following pages suggest how the AKDN agency could investigate these subjects, and decide on action.
In many societies women are marginalised, exploited, and given few chances to acquire education, experience or the chance to show their strengths. The CSO should demonstrate that it has a different opinion and is prepared to put such opinions into practice.
Gender refers to the social differences between women and men that are learned through socialisation, and which are not intrinsic characteristics of each sex. In nearly all societies women are discriminated against, and in some countries such discrimination is underpinned by tradition, custom, laws and religious observances.
An enormous amount is lost to a society when women do not have access to education, jobs, decision making and responsibility. Even more is lost if this is underpinned by domestic physical and sexual violence.
What can an AKDN agency do encourage gender equity?
1. The AKDN agency can make sure that staff and volunteer positions are accessible to women as much as men, and when traditions and culture block this, can work to break down such practices and be a model as a fair employer with regard to gender balance.
2. Look for ways in which the agency and the CSOs with which it associates can overcome some of the difficulties that women have in overcoming structural problems – such as making sure crêches exist for nursing mothers, and that transport (or security) is provided for women to come and go on CSO business.
3. Think of ways in which the usual imbalance of power between men and women can be re-aligned – e.g. by making evening classes available to women, giving them access to literacy materials, or making sure that they have access to credit.
4. As mentioned before, ascertain what organisations already work on gender equity issues and see if they can be helpful to your organisation.
5. Look for agencies, organisations, firms and government departments that are practising what you consider to be good gender relations, and hold them up as a model.
6. Have clear rules and regulations against abuse of women in your organisation, and practice zero tolerance for infractions.
7. Have services in place to help women connected to your organisation who may suffer from domestic violence or other physical and sexual violence.

RELATED: UCA CURRICULUM- 7.   Rhythm and Movement

The rhythm and Movement course will explore the great influence music has had on shaping human society and history. The main purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to dance and music as important disciplines within the humanities and to debate basic ideas related to the art's aesthetics. All the materials presented in this course are selected from different cultures and civilizations (Europe, America, Russia, some Muslim countries, and India, among others) that gave had direct or indirect links to the history and contemporary life of Central Asia. This course will allow the participants to freely question existing musical forms, groups, and ensembles and to challenge the ruling cultural, traditional and political attitudes concerning issues of professional or local musical performance, self expression, and the responsibilities of musicians to society.

Features of Red spider software
Red Spider educational software, developed by Guangzhou Chuangxun Software Co., Ltd.
Development, runs the TCP / IP Windows2000/XP/2003/Vista/Windows7 network loaded with TCP/IP protocol, it supports 32-bit and 64-bit Windows systems, it mainly realizes multimedia information network teaching and broadcasting on the LAN for its excellent quality, it is a very good software product with the integration of synchronous teaching, control, management, audio and video broadcast, on-line exam in computer classrooms, and it can achieve the purposes of network management such as simultaneous screen monitoring and remote control[2].
Easy software installation:
Traditional computer classroom, in the general sense, is such a system implemented with projector or hardware network. However, a general classroom cannot be equipped with such a system for its high cost or some other reasons, such as large hardware depletion, troublesome maintenance and difficult updating. But for Red Spider software, a pure software solution, it completely avoid these hardware problems to enable teachers to put theory of teaching into practice, teachers can make a variety of teaching demonstrations on the computer, and any teachers’ step of the procedure is in real-time transmission to the student's computer screen.
Powerful functions and flexible interaction:
A variety of multimedia courseware information, optical disk teaching resources, experimental demonstration system, teaching methods and experiences can be realized by integrating voice, images, text, animation as one through the use of this software to achieve modern interactive teaching mode.
Texts, images, voice and video resources can be shared throughout the multimedia classroom. In this way, interactive communication environment can be realized by constructing a text, voice, video, images, and students can share on their computer screens a variety of teaching resources, it does not only greatly reduce the workload of teachers, but also significantly improve the efficiency of teaching, and the teaching content is extremely lively and the students are willing to accept.
Main functions of the Red Spider educational software
The main functions of the Red Spider educational software are as follows:
Teacher demonstration: to perform real-time synchronous broadcasting of the screen of the teacher’s machine to individual or all the students with teaching demonstrations. It can also be broadcasting the image screen in the form of animated images recorded to make into courseware or teaching materials for re-use or shared with other teachers. Moreover, it can use pre-recorded screen to back play the demo directly to the students’ computers through the network, with this feature, the teaching of automation and standardization can be realized.
Student demonstration: easily to specify any of the students to demonstrate the operation to other groups of students to conduct mutual exchanges and learning while supporting the demonstration of the window or full screen mode.
Black silence: to lock the keyboard and mouse of one or all of the students of the local computer to make the screen display black so that the students’ lectures seriously.
Voice teaching: to conduct voice broadcasting by microphone and headset, and to realize free voice chat and discussion between teachers and students including online voice broadcasting, one-to-one talk, multilateral debate or voice listening.
Screen monitoring: to conduct real-time (looping) monitoring on computer screens of one or more students, teachers do not need to leave the seat to understand students' learning on the student machines across the network monitoring and management.
Remote counseling: Teachers can directly conduct remote control and operation of a student's computers to realized two-way communication with remote students by "hands-on" interactive remedial teaching.
Screen playback: to save the screen recorded in the form of animated images, then playback the screen when recorded, which can either facilitate the teachers ahead of lesson planning, the production of teaching materials related to teaching content, but also to solve the problem of students not keep up with the progress of teaching, and allow students in their spare time to review the contents of the class to improve the quality of teaching.
E-Responder: race to be the first to answer a question to help students learn in fun competitions, and to assist teachers in a timely manner to test the learning outcomes in order to identify problems and solve the problem.
File transfer: to perform a one-time transmission of one or more files to the specified student computer and specify to automatically open or run the file transferred after the end of transmission, do online software installation, distribute papers or demonstrate courseware, which greatly improved work efficiency.
Submit assignment: students can submit multiple files and directory assignment by cooperation with the teacher to realize student-teacher "file transfer", thus fully realizing file interaction between students and teachers through the distribution and submission of students' work online.
Online discussion: through chat by voice and text chat between teacher and students, all the texts will be automatically saved form history and can be readily available when needed.
Far-end message: teachers can acquire on teacher’s computer the machine configuration information of all the students to facilitate management. The information obtained includes: operating system, memory usage, disk allocation and spatial properties of the network / protocol / service, the IP address allocation, parameter settings, seating arrangements.
Process Information: to instantly view each student on the already open applications, and running processes information. If they are found in the class secretly playing games or chatting online, or should any exception process occur, students can always be remotely terminated.
On-line situation: all the students on the line, not on the line, quitting, quitting unexpectedly or escape, network disconnection can be on real-time detection and discovery through details for the teacher’s inquiries and immediately submitted to the teacher for the latest situation so as to make real-time processing. This mechanism plays a more active role in preventing students to freely escape control.
Electronic show of hands: should any students have problems to consult the teacher, they can always call the teacher, the teacher can answer those students at any time for those shows of hands via voice or text response.
Remote command: this software provides remote unified switch-on and switch-off program and computer-restarting instructions, and enables / disables students to send online messages, to submit jobs, and provide synchronization system parameter setting, synchronous upgrade services, and synchronizes system time and other functions. Also, the software can synchronize directly to open the application programs on students’ computers to ensure a unified interface you want to teach in the course.
Class Management: this software provides a very powerful class, group, and student and computer management system. It does not need to be configured to begin the task of teaching. And it introduces the concept of "class, students" to make more than one class configuration management, to arrange the seating of students, to conduct the current state of the group management and teaching demonstration by monitoring students computer.
Problems should be noted
Properly handle the relationships between the teaching instruction and students’ practice:
Teaching practice with students is a dialectical unity. Questions teachers explain should be consistent with those of the students’. Two problems are likely to occur if not properly controlled:
In the first place, teachers speak too much, which leads to the fact that students do not have enough time to practice. With limited class time, that a teacher simply completes the task of teaching in an unbroken time will results in the too long presentation time with teaching taking too much content, which makes students feel learning boring without digesting the content.
In the second place, the demonstration of the teachers’ is synchronous with the students’ practice, which leads to unexpected bad effect. If students themselves are allowed to operate in learning, students will forget certain key steps. This is because the students focus only on the form of imitation in the learning process, but ignore the cognitive improvement.
Desirable practice: First, the teachers demonstrate complete the steps to enable students to watch, not to operate but understanding the overall teaching task, then teachers operate, students follow, meanwhile teachers explain the problems that may occur in steps and procedure, and answer all the problems; in the final, the students independently complete the task or similar task of teaching, in order to achieve the purpose of the flexible application.
Grasp the necessary timing of a good teacher-student interaction:
Classroom teaching is not a process of teachers’ continuous flow of instruction, not is it the practice of the students themselves, but rather it should be an interaction. Teachers’ rational use of interactive in the classroom with students can grasp the extent of knowledge. “Student demonstration”, “Online communication” and “remote counseling” can be used in the Red Spider educational software. Classroom interaction can be prepared in advance and improvising can be carried out by pre-prepared teachers through pre-arranged exchange programs in the teaching process, for example, when a problem is finished by way of discussion or problems, let everyone speak out their own achievement. Spot to play is a temporary problem; teachers in the teaching process should discuss the problem in a timely manner, to study the questions which have arisen due to the solution.
Flexible use of instructional interaction can improve classroom teaching and stimulate students' interest in learning.
Take into account students' individual differences in the ability:
Differences between students, such as intelligence, personality, etc. are an objective reality, teachers cannot deny or ignore the existence of individual differences. In multimedia network teaching, teachers should take into account students' individual differences in the ability to timely adjust the progress of teaching. Teachers can use screen monitor function of the Red Spider educational software to keep abreast of students' understanding of the situation and differences, and discern those who have learned a little better or not, and should be fully aware of whoever has mastered the teaching objective in order to achieve in the classroom counseling targeted. In addition, teachers can promptly adjust the student seat, arranging seats of good students to sit together with poor student in learning. This is not only to promote the progress of poor students, but also to help build the sense of accomplishment of good students who offer helps, which can also reduce the burden on teachers.
Conclusions
The Red Spider software is a very powerful teaching management software, and the rational use of the Red Spider software in the multimedia network classroom can stimulate students' interest, reduce teachers' burden and promote classroom interaction so as to improve teaching effectiveness.

REORIENTATION - Key to BETTER TOMORROW

PRESENTATION
Constitution gives a unifying structure of governance to all Nizaris and their religiously-based institutions, who are established in more than 25 countries and territories around the globe. Due to the differing social, economic, and political realities faced by the Nizari diaspora, the constitution has built-in flexibility, allowing various communities the ability to propose rules and regulations unique to individual communities, while retaining the overall unity of framework with all other communities, through detailed provisions within the constitution.
Appointment Meeting Guidance:
The governance structure of the Jamat in Pakistan was established under the Ismaili Constitution ordained in 1986. Changes since then in the Jamat’s needs and priorities call for an in-depth review of the present structure with a view to considering such changes and amendments as would render the institutions more responsive to current and projected Jamati and national circumstances, more effective in their performance and easier to manage.
We have to build a better functional system, it’s the collegiate responsibility of the National Council, and the Jamati leadership in Pakistan is more than qualified to do so. Keep in mind that I am searching for a fully functional system, it wasn’t possible before, but now I think we can get there. I would ask you to move it forward on the premise of reality, not on the premise of wishful thinking.
.....The realities are many different levels of needs and demographic presence in Pakistan and yet there is a single National Council that is addressing the whole set of different issues in different areas of the country, and it has to be responsible and sensitive to them. There are too many differentiated needs and these are massive. There are many matters which can be dealt uniformly countrywide. Look at this responsibility as being collegiate no matter what part of Pakistan you come from. There is collegiate responsibility for the whole of Pakistan. I would like you to accept the mandate to put this right progressively. We improve the system and the goal is to serve all the Jamat of Pakistan.
We have a system in Pakistan of Jamati governance and AKDN activities which is actually dysfunctional. What I have said to the leaders is that I have been aware of this dysfunctionality for a long time, but I have never put it on the table because it was not the right time. I put it to you now because at that time the environment was unpredictable. That is not the responsibility of any individual; it is the responsibility of the National Council as a collegiate body to function in the interest of all the Jamat throughout Pakistan.
I was seeking to place more responsibility at the regional council to monitor what is happening in their areas, so that the regional councils have a better understanding of what is happening in their region. I am trying to strengthen the capacity of the regional councils to do their work, and even correct or improve as time goes by.
I think what we need is a field driven system, and our organisation has to respond. If the field makes irrational requests then the system will collapse. So they have to function within certain parameters, and those parameters can be set during the policy and strategy discussion.
It would give much more focused monitoring to the National and Regional Councils. Judgments will have to be made. If you have a national education or health programme, you are not going to be able to cut it into little areas. We could do it with the financial Institutions - how much credit is going into which province, what is the deposit pattern from different provinces . We could look at health and education access on provincial basis. It would give us much more sophisticated monitoring devices than we have now. We could do it with financial institutions –. We could have more sophisticated monitoring devices than we have now ........."
Constitutional obligations of voluntary leadership applicable to all tiers (including LC):

WEBCAST:
"Societies can best strengthen themselves by mobilizing their own dynamic forces rather than relying on external support and direction." Imam has desired REORIENTATION since 2002; I have so far not succeeded in influencing the mindset of local leadership as well as institutions towards this direction, read and listen to this in the DJ webcast:

I hope we become convinced about the relevant beliefs now available through the TALIM curriculum rather than the "DAS AVTAR" scripture compiled by Pir Saddruddin or Wajh-e-Din compiled by Pir Nasir-e-Khisraw.
Secondary curriculum is not available in Pakistan despite the unquestioned importance. I suggest it must be made available on line to overcome stated difficulties in importing hard copies. Adverse effects of national curriculum on students can be reduced only through making these TALIM curriculum/books available to every home and REC without further loss of time.
CONCLUSION: Leadership and Institutions must follow the CIVIL SOCIETY LEARNING MATERIAL and the new SECONDARY TALIMAT CURRICULUM as the BEDROCK towards building a BETTER TOMORROW as part of REORIENTATION AND THE SIPIRIT OF 1998 CONSTITUTION

To help these organisations become effective and self-reliant, AKDN offers resources and training for essential administrative skills such as record-keeping, accounting and methods of good governance. It also helps communities to lobby for change by working in collaboration with other villages when liaising with the government.

Words of Wisdom from the Guide:

"A vast decentralisation of decision-making is already occurring in many countries; it has the advantage of placing new responsibilities in the hands of local communities.... For the key to future progress will lie less in traditional top-down systems of command and control -- and more in a broad, bottom-up spirit of coordination and cooperation."
"Social progress, in the long run, will not be found by delegating a dominant role to any one player- but rather through multi-sector partnerships. And within each sector of society, diversity should be a watchword. Healthy communities must respect a range of educational choices ... [The Ummah] must become full and even leading participants in the Knowledge Society of the 21st Century. That will mean embracing the values of collaboration and coordination, openness and partnership, choice and diversity -- which will under-gird the Knowledge Society, learning constantly to review and revise and renew what we think we know -- learning how to go on learning. In the age of the Internet, knowledge is universally shaped, universally accessible, and universally applied. And successful institutions of learning must be global institutions.... [I]n the Knowledge Society, productive research is most often partnership research ... sharing agendas and exchanging insights. New knowledge is a constantly unfolding gift of God -- but it is rarely something that is achieved in isolation."
